The Process

Testing is often a daunting and multi-step process that begins from our first conversation and ends once you receive your results and have all of your questions answered.

Here’s a step by step breakdown of the assessment process.

  • You will reach out to us using our contact form or email to schedule a free 15-30 minute consultation. During this time, Dr. Mickens will ask about your needs for testing and explain how testing may benefit you. She will answer any questions that you have about the process. If you both agree that testing will answer your questions, you’ll be scheduled for a 90 minute clinical interview with Dr. Mickens.

  • Dr. Mickens will spend 90 minutes with you asking questions about your symptoms, how they impact you, and gathering more information about your physical health, emotional health, educational/work history, family/social life, leisure activities, and goals for the assessment. During this time Dr. Mickens begins to form possible diagnoses and starts to plan which tests she will need to administer in order to diagnose or rule out a diagnosis. Prior to this appointment, you will complete an intake form as well as some symptom inventories and questionnaires that help to guide the discussion. She will also  review these with you during this appointment. At the end of this appointment, she will have a plan for which tests to provide and a timeline for the assessment process.

  • After the clinical interview, if you choose to use your insurance benefits to cover the costs of testing, Dr. Mickens will submit forms to your insurance requesting for a prior authorization to conduct the testing. As she communicates with insurance, you’ll need to contact other providers (i.e., primary care physicians, pediatricians, psychiatrists, teachers, etc) to obtain any records that you would like Dr. Mickens to review as part of the assessment and to include in her report. Once the insurance company provides information about what tests or how many hours of testing they will cover, you and Dr. Mickens will discuss the cost of your assessment, report, and feedback session.

  • You will either come to one of Dr. Mickens’ offices or she will complete the testing with you virtually. All of our tests involve written and spoken communication tasks with some drawing involved. The tests will feel similar to some tasks that you may have completed in school or at work. You will not get the results of the tests on the day of testing. You will not be able to study beforehand and the tests are designed this way. Dr. Mickens will give you a range of tests to truly understand your strengths and weaknesses. Our tests will include measures of attention, memory, problem solving, processing speed, executive functioning, working memory, social communication, and emotional wellness.

  • For 2-3 weeks after you complete testing, Dr. Mickens will score all of your tests and then combine your test results with the information you provided to her during the clinical interview, her observations of you during testing, and others’ observations as described in the records you provided to her. She will take all of this information and write a comprehensive report that summarizes your strengths, weaknesses, and any information that meets diagnostic criteria. She will write a report that she will share with you during the feedback session.

  • After the report is finalized, you will meet with Dr. Mickens for 60 minutes. She will use this time to discuss your test results, any diagnostic information, and review her recommendations for you moving forward. This is an interactive discussion and you are encouraged to ask questions to understand the results and what they mean for you on a daily basis. At the end of this meeting, you will receive a virtual copy of the report and any recommendations discussed. If you need accommodations, Dr. Mickens will also review any forms or formal accommodation letters with you as well prior to sending them to individuals who need to review them.

What Clients Say

  • I felt like Dr. Mickens really took the time to get to know me in a way that no other therapist had. She asked great questions that made me think and shifted my perspective on myself and situations where I often blame myself.”

  • “I learned so much about myself! Dr. Melody is curious and doesn’t miss a beat. She is warm, friendly, and can challenge you without being critical or unkind.”

  • She doesn’t just stay in the past. Other therapists kept going back to my childhood, but Dr. Mickens helped me learn how to focus on the now and how I wanted to use knowledge about my past to make better decisions in my relationships now and to move on from situations that I’ve outgrown or stayed in because of my anxiety and trauma.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • This is an expensive process because of the time and level of expertise involved in interpreting the test results to form an accurate diagnosis. Providers differ on what is necessary for a diagnosis, but our professional standards as set by the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology and the National Academy of Neuropsychology recommend a thorough clinical interview and objective testing to identify areas of cognitive impairment in order to comprehensively diagnose these disorders. Objective testing can only be administered by someone with training in these tests and how to interpret them.

  • Yes. Both of these disorders present in childhood, but many children are not screened or have parents or educators who do not recognize symptoms of these disorders. Adults often learn to adapt or develop learning strategies or receive supports to offset symptoms. However, at some point, their symptoms negatively impact some aspect of their daily lives and this is often what leads them to get evaluated and diagnosed even after living with these disorders for years.

  • Having a diagnosis is a way for you to understand your strengths and areas where you may need additional supports or skills. While we can never control how others use medical information that we share with them, we can use this information to make choices for ourselves that can improve our quality of life.

  • Generally, no. Most of these tests are stable over time unless you have a significant shift in your medical or emotional status. For example, if you had a stroke or sustained a brain injury, your results in some areas of your thinking may change depending on the severity of these events. Results from adolescence through adulthood tend to be stable over time with some age related decline that can occur usually over the age of 60. However, you can be re-tested and we recommend waiting 12-18 months or longer between testing.
