Psychotherapy services for adults

(ages 18-64)

Individual services for adults seeking treatment for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and grief/loss.

Individualized care for a diversity of emotional concerns

At Wellpointe, therapy is never one size fits all.

Because we have unique life experiences that bring us to therapy, our approach is focused on your specific goals. As such, we offer a variety of evidence based modalities for treatment and to promote emotional wellness.

Individual and Couples Therapy Services at Wellpointe begin with a comprehensive clinical interview that spans the first three sessions. During these visits, Dr. Mickens creates a treatment plan to focus your treatment on symptom reduction, increased insight into your strengths, and to collaborate with you to accomplish your goals for your emotional wellness. This treatment plan is informed by your concerns as well as responses to symptom inventories to address symptom severity and frequency.

After moving forward with the treatment plan, your treatment may include one or more of the following modalities:

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)

EMDR is a treatment that combines cognitive, emotional, and somatic (body focused) processing of traumatic events to reduce PTSD symptoms. EMDR is a comprehensive treatment for trauma, but can also be used for treatment of chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and unresolved grief.

Who it’s for: EMDR is appropriate for adults, adolescents, and children who have experienced traumatic events, feel stuck in past patterns, or who haven’t made the progress they want with traditional talk therapy. At Wellpointe, our practice provides treatment to adults ages 18-64.

Frequency: Delivered weekly for 60 minute, 90 minute, or 120 minute sessions.

Details: Virtual and in-person options available.

Pricing: 60 minute sessions are covered by insurance (BCBS, Aetna, Cigna); 90-120 minute sessions are not covered by insurance and have separate fee schedules.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a time-limited therapy designed to treat many psychological conditions including anxiety, depression, ADHD, panic disorder, OCD, chronic pain, insomnia, PTSD, anger, stress management, and relationship concerns. CBT focuses on differentiating our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while helping individuals establish behavioral patterns that increase positive experiences and reduce negative experiences.

Who it’s for: CBT is beneficial for adults, adolescents, and children with most psychological diagnoses and concerns. At Wellpointe, we treat adults ages 18-64.

Frequency: Weekly for 60 minute sessions. CBT programs tend to be 12-24 weeks on average. CBT requires work outside of therapy sessions to reinforce skill building and transfer.

Details: Virtual and in-person sessions offered.

Pricing: 60 minute sessions are covered by insurance (BCBS, Aetna, Cigna). Out of Network rates available as well.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

IFS is a therapeutic model designed to address internal conflict by examining parts of ourselves that carry different emotions, shield us from hurtful experiences, or hold us back from growth. The goal of IFS is to identify these conflicting and often wounded parts and their roles in current symptoms and interpersonal conflicts while focusing on ways to meet their needs so that they can align with one’s core self beliefs.

Who it’s for: IFS is best for adults and adolescents as it requires the ability to think abstractly about oneself and their experiences. IFS is often a part of trauma focused work and work with individuals who have difficulty making progress with more behaviorally focused approaches.  At Wellpointe, we treat adults ages 18-64.

Frequency: Weekly or bi-monthly (every other week) sessions for 60 minutes.

Details: Virtual  and in person sessions offered.

Pricing: 60 minute sessions are covered by insurance (BCBS, Aetna, Cigna). Out of Network rates available as well.

Somatic Experiencing and Somatic Therapy

Somatic Experiencing and Somatic Therapy are body focused treatment modalities designed to address the effects of trauma on the body and especially on the mind-body connection. Many individuals experience dissociation or a severing of the mind-body connection after a traumatic event or repeated stressful events. Somatic focused therapies emphasize reconnecting with the body’s sensations, grounding oneself, increasing movement, and building a felt sense and capacity for emotional expression.

Who it’s for: Somatic focused therapy is best for individuals who feel disconnected from their bodies or who may feel overwhelmed by bodily sensations and physical symptoms. A major goal of somatic therapy is teaching individuals to center and regulate their emotions by engaging with their nervous systems.

Frequency: Weekly sessions for 60 minutes.

Details: In person sessions preferred with virtual available.

Pricing: 60 minute sessions are covered by insurance (BCBS, Aetna, Cigna). Out of Network rates available as well.

What Clients Say

  • I felt like Dr. Mickens really took the time to get to know me in a way that no other therapist had. She asked great questions that made me think and shifted my perspective on myself and situations where I often blame myself.”

  • “I learned so much about myself! Dr. Melody is curious and doesn’t miss a beat. She is warm, friendly, and can challenge you without being critical or unkind.”

  • She doesn’t just stay in the past. Other therapists kept going back to my childhood, but Dr. Mickens helped me learn how to focus on the now and how I wanted to use knowledge about my past to make better decisions in my relationships now and to move on from situations that I’ve outgrown or stayed in because of my anxiety and trauma.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • That depends on your goals and your needs. Most individuals need 6 months-12 months of weekly therapy to address acute symptoms, achieve a solid set of coping and self-regulation skills, and to develop a good working relationship with their therapist. The length of therapy can also vary depending on the modality or type of therapy as well as work that is done in session and outside of session.

  • The work that occurs in therapy is preparation for skills that you’ll use with your family, friends, community, and coworkers. Therapy provides a safe relationship and place to learn, be vulnerable, and receive feedback, but the true test of therapy is how you apply these skills outside of the therapy hour. If you think about it, there are 168 hours in a week and you only spend 1 of those with a therapist. The work you do all the other hours of the week builds on the one hour you have with your therapist and leads to long lasting change.

  • Signs of improvement in therapy can vary, but usually you start to notice that you have more information and insight into how you think and feel and which situations or people contribute to your mood. You may feel a drop in the intensity of your symptoms or you may have increased awareness of emotions that you are feeling or the ways in which your body is supporting you or present. You may start to notice improvements in your relationships, your daily routines, and even aspects such as your sleep quality and energy levels.

  • Yes. For most individuals, the combination of therapy and medications will give them the best results and best chance of achieving sustained emotional wellness. Medications focus on the neurochemical aspects of psychological illness, but therapy allows you change your behaviors and your environment, learn new ways to cope with stressors, and process past events that may contribute to repeated patterns that keep you stuck and unwell.

  • This can happen and if it does, bring it up to your therapist. When we are discussing emotional topics, especially those that we repress or work very hard to avoid or cannot tolerate, talking through them and sitting with them for an hour can activate our nervous system and introduce a new stress. As you become more familiar with the difficult emotions and build a trusting relationship with your therapist, there is an opportunity to find new ways to acknowledge these experiences and build strategies to manage them, recognize them, and confront them. If you continue to feel worse even after discussing this with your therapist, it may be time to consider switching treatments or possibly providers.
