in Richmond, VA
We offer three theme based groups that meet virtually & in person for 1.5 hours.
Groups include:
Heal in Connection with Others
Group therapy is an opportunity to connect with others, enhance coping skills, improve communication, and apply skills from individual therapy sessions.
Group sessions are confidential with the expectation that the work that occurs in the group session remains there.
Unlike individual sessions, a focus of group therapy is learning about yourself in relation to others. Group therapy also helps to normalize experiences of loneliness, frustration, overwhelm, and isolation that can occur during major life changes.
Our therapy groups are run by a licensed psychologist who facilitates discussion, introspection, and provides instruction. Our four groups address unique concerns and create specific community spaces for personal growth while increasing relationships with others.

What Clients Say
-
Individual therapy focuses on the relationship between you and your therapist and specifically on enhancing your insight into a specific concern while building skills to help you cope with this concern. Group therapy can include education and skills, but also emphasizes relational experiences that provide different perspectives and opportunities to practice interpersonal skills.
-
Group therapy offers an opportunity to practice some of the skills you are learning in individual therapy and to do so with peers and in a confidential setting where you can get feedback. Group therapy is especially beneficial for individuals with limited social connections, those experiencing isolation, or individuals who want to explore new relational patterns to improve relationship quality and satisfaction.
-
Each group functions a little differently, but most include some similar qualities. Groups are led by Dr. Mickens or another therapist. Each group begins with a review of group rules, the most important of which are confidentiality, tolerance for others’ opinions, and personal responsibility for achieving your own goals. Skills focused groups will have a structured agenda that Dr. Mickens will review. Our interpersonal group is unstructured which allows for the natural flow of conversation and interaction.
-
Groups will vary in size, but will be capped at 10 individuals per session. We will run groups with as few as 2 members.
-
No! Prior to beginning group therapy, you will meet with Dr. Mickens to establish your specific goals. Once you set your goals, it is up to you to determine how you achieve them in the group. If you feel vocal or want to talk, there’s always room for your voice. If you need a quieter day or space to process what’s going on around you, that’s okay too.
