A practice focused on cultivating your strengths, building inner wisdom, and helping you put the past behind you.

Wellpointe Therapy is a practice with a mission to meet clients where they are and to help them examine how they’d like to grow beyond trauma, crises, stressful events, and life’s setbacks.

Our goal is to create a therapy space that values authenticity while enhancing compassion, self-awareness, and skills to manage stress and overwhelming emotions.

Because we value authenticity, our practice is inclusive and thrives on treating clients with diverse identities and life experiences.

Our curiosity about you, your experiences, and your values creates an experience focused on helping you define yourself in the present and charting who you want to be in the future.

Bring your authentic self so we can help you grow.

I wanted to create space for those who felt misunderstood, dismissed, and unheard.

Early in 2021 at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of my clients in medical settings echoed similar sentiments of feeling as if the people closest to them and most important to them did not understand them or mislabeled them as overly emotional. They in turn began to question themselves and to hate their emotions.

I found that my clients from marginalized backgrounds experienced the most pain without having providers who could understand cultural factors within relationships.

In our sessions, as I offered these clients alternative views of themselves, space to be themselves and speak about their experiences without judgment, and validation of their emotions, they began to understand that they were not the problem, but that others’ expectations of them had led them to shrink themselves and beat themselves up.

The longer I worked with these clients and helped them to differentiate between their values and rejecting others’ outdated expectations, my clients began to define expectations for themselves, reject outdated expectations from others, create experiences that brought them joy, and grow in confidence and self-acceptance.

Wellpointe Therapy grew out of these experiences and more specifically became a place where clients could stop blaming themselves, embody and celebrate their unique identities, and create relationships with others who could appreciate and value them as they are.

Wellpointe, a place of wellness and a turning point, became a practice focused on the client and their current experiences beyond ingrained patterns of self-doubt, internalized criticism, or fitting into relationships and spaces where they have sacrificed who they are to hold on to people who invalidate them.

Let us meet you as you are and learn about how you’d like to grow.

My Path to Becoming a Psychologist

  • For most of my life, I have been curious about people’s actions and thoughts, largely driven by a desire to understand and empathize with others. These innate curiosities guided me toward earning a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Sociology. Staying true to my inquisitive nature, I chose to focus more on clinical research rather than directly treating individuals with psychological disorders.

  • After completing my undergraduate studies, I pursued and earned a PhD in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in Behavioral Medicine. I then continued my training with a postdoctoral fellowship in Rehabilitation Psychology and Neuropsychology. Through ongoing self-reflection, I came to understand that my professional passion lies in empowering clients—not just to recognize who they are and how their past experiences have shaped them, but more importantly, to use this insight to forge a future that aligns with their core values and strengths.

  • Earlier in my career, I sought out diverse clinical experiences, working with patients diagnosed with traumatic injuries, disabilities, neurological disorders, and the emotional challenges that often accompany such conditions. While I had the expertise to serve this population, I realized I craved a broader scope in my professional life. I desired to work with clients facing different issues and began seeking new ways to make a meaningful impact.

  • In 2021, I transitioned from a medical practice to private practice, shifting my focus to treating individuals struggling with grief and loss, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, OCD, and relationship difficulties. During this period of change, I noticed a deep resonance with clients who felt misunderstood—whether by society, family, or in the workplace. Many of these individuals belonged to racial and ethnic minorities, gender minorities, or identified as LGBTQIA+, often facing significant discrimination.

  • As I founded Wellpointe Therapy and built trusting relationships with my clients, I became increasingly dedicated to creating a safe and empowering space. My goal evolved into not only offering individual therapy but also facilitating growth within couples and communities. I expanded my therapeutic toolbox by obtaining training in EMDR, the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Exposure Response Therapy, and Psychodynamic Therapy.

  • I am deeply committed to the ongoing evolution of my practice and skills to keep pace with the ever-changing needs of my clients. My work is centered on fostering understanding, healing, and personal transformation, ensuring that each individual I work with has the tools and support necessary to thrive.

Your place to grow is here

My integrative approach

highlighting your strengths and builds up your weaknesses

As a therapist and a neuropsychologist, my approach to therapy includes comprehensive assessment of your symptoms, strengths, coping resources, and psychosocial supports.

Through the first several sessions, I gather this information and create a treatment plan focused on your goals. From there, I offered evidence based treatment to reduce symptoms, increase insight, develop skills, and strengthen relationships.

My approach includes neuropsychological evaluation for concerns about ADHD, Autism, and Specific Learning Disorders.

For therapy clients, depending on your presenting symptoms, I may recommend a combination of individual and group therapy, individual therapy, or couples therapy.

Individual modalities include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy, and Psychodynamic Therapy . Group modalities are skills based and draw from Interpersonal Processing or behavioral skills models from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Couples Therapy uses the Gottman Method to restore connection.

For each step, I offer options and education about therapy modalities and expectations to help you decide on the best treatment plan for your goals.

What Clients Say

  • I felt like Dr. Mickens really took the time to get to know me in a way that no other therapist had. She asked great questions that made me think and shifted my perspective on myself and situations where I often blame myself.”

  • “I learned so much about myself! Dr. Melody is curious and doesn’t miss a beat. She is warm, friendly, and can challenge you without being critical or unkind.”

  • She doesn’t just stay in the past. Other therapists kept going back to my childhood, but Dr. Mickens helped me learn how to focus on the now and how I wanted to use knowledge about my past to make better decisions in my relationships now and to move on from situations that I’ve outgrown or stayed in because of my anxiety and trauma.

My Therapy Values

Creativity

Everyone’s life experiences are different and sometimes we need an out of the box way to connect especially with our minds and bodies. At Wellpointe, we value creative expression to engage clients and make the work of therapy relevant to their life experiences and everyday life.

Community

None of us can heal alone. Distress and mental illness thrive in isolation, but growth requires connection with others. At Wellpointe, a major tenet of our work is to help individuals find, join, and create community through social connection and self-exploration.

Empowerment

Our goal is to help all of our clients identify their values and engage in behaviors that embody these beliefs and motivate them to move through their lives and the world with a sense of purpose and self-direction.

Authenticity

We commit to showing up as our authentic selves and invite our clients to do the same—even when they’re not at their best or feeling vulnerable. Authenticity helps us meet you where you are and build a meaningful connection with every part of you.

Humor

One of the signs of growth and healing is the ability to laugh at yourself and with others. Humor brings us joy and connection and signifies that we have moved beyond sadness and hopelessness. We use laughter to connect, bring lightness, celebrate growth, and instill hope.
